    The goal The aim of this course is to develop students’ ability to recognize, comprehend and resolve basic practical problems in written translation through the process of translating simpler but longer texts in the field of law, economics, technique, science, etc. The aim of the course is also to develop students’ ability to resolve different problems that occur as a consequence of various types of equivalence on syntactic, semantic and pragmatic level. This course develops students’ awareness of the existence of different translation strategies. It develops critical view towards one’s own and others’ translations, as well as the ability to argument one’s own critical standpoint.
    The outcome After the course students should be able to: analyze a great number of different types of texts and translate them into some of target languages, to resolve translation problems by using appropriate translation techniques and strategies, critically evaluate the adequacy of the applied translation techniques in one’s own translation and in translations of other translators.
    Contents
    Contents of lectures Weekly topics: (1 and 2) Acquis communautaire; (3 and 4) Politics (daily politics, international politics, elections, diplomacy, system of government, public administration); (5 and 6) Economics and business language; (7 and 8) Culture, art, education; (9 and 10) The language of the media (electronic and printed media); (11 and 12) Humanistic and natural sciences, technique, computer and information technology.
    Contents of exercises In the beginning, texts of more general register are analyzed, but students also analyze specific problems of the given registers. Texts are given as homework assignments, so that students come prepared for classes. Students are expected to apply the acquired translation procedures.
