      The goal The aim of this course is to train students to use a number of research methods and to familiarize them with the basic principles of computer-assisted translation and terminology management, all for the</a> purpose of successfully performing translation tasks, as well as for the purpose of preparing for writing final papers / MA theses and conducting research work in the field of translation studies.Application of research methods such as finding sources in libraries and on the Internet, their critical evaluation and use, the use and expansion of publicly available terminology databases on the Internet, are aimed at raising the level of translation competencies and efficiency in performing translation tasks as well as in research work .
      The outcome Upon the completion of the course, the student should be able to perform the collection and critical evaluation of terminological resources and reference materials in scope of preparing language resources necessary for translation and / or research work in the field of translation studies.Students should also be able to critically evaluate the capabilities of software packages for computer-assisted translation and terminology management, and to choose the best combination of language resources and program tools for a specific translation project and/or research undertaking.The students should also be able to use basebasic descriptive statistics within scientific research in the field of translation studies, as well as to conceive and carry out research work and then present it in the form of proposal for scientific or graduate thesis.
      Contents
      Contents of lectures Classification of research methods by their type.Key terms. Comparative, processional and causal models of research.Terminological theory, concepts, conceptual structure, concept representation and definitions. Terminological databases (termbases). Monolingual and bilingual termbases. Structure of termbases.Extraction and exchange of terminology among termbases. Standardization of terminology. The interface between the translation and terminology. Parallel corpora and terminology. Basic principles of computer- aided translation. Structure of the final paper (MA thesis).Planning, goals, hypotheses, methodological approaches. Selection and collection of sources, parallelization of texts and annotation of texts in order to perform research work in the field of translation studies.
      Contents of exercises Practical application of theoretical knowledge through exercises on the computer: research and collection of reference materials in databases; annotation of text data; work with terminological resources; search and creation of monolingual and bilingual corpora and their application in terminology management; basic quantitative research of the corpus; the use of bibliographic resources management software; basics of work in programs for computer-assisted translation.
