      The goal a) Introduction to: - approaches to audience research and broader theoretical frameworks of their origin, - specificity of different types of audiences, - related concepts (mass, public, users, consumers), - audience research methods. b) Developing knowledge and skills for researching media and other audiences.
      The outcome At the end of the course students should be able to: - apply key communication theories and concepts related to audience, - differentiate theoretical and methodological approaches to audience research, - apply audience research methods.

      Contents of lectures Audience and related concepts. Initial understanding of audience. Mass audience in dominant communication paradigm. Functionalist approach to audience. Cultural approach to audience. Media centric approach to audience. Mass media audiences. Audiences of digital media. Other forms of audiencehood. Quantitative audience research methods. Qualitative audience research methods.
      Contents of exercises Discussions about student independent research and two seminar papers.
