      The goal The goal of this course is to acquaint doctoral students with the historical development of philosophical interest in language, in order to get insight into systematic aspects of language problems which were (and many of them still are) fundamental to philosophy.
      The outcome After an in-depth studying of recommended texts, the outcomes of this course are students’ abilities to discern the specific philosophical problems of language and to recognize the importance of some methods and positions for the discussion of these problems.
      Contents
      Contents of lectures Concept of philosophy of language. History of philosophy of language. Ancient Greece context: logic and rhetoric. Beginnings of language criticism (nominalism, British empiricism). Critique of metaphysical language and the paradigm of scientific language (logical postivism). Semiotics and empirical linguistics. Structuralism and deconstruction. Analytic philosophy. Hermeneutics. Systematic problems: The concept of meaning. Difference between sense and meaning. Propositional logic. Language and meta-language. Pragmatics, language games, theory of speech acts. Performativity of language. Universality of metaphors. Ideological abuse of language.
