| The goal | Introduction to translation procedures in the translation of general texts, as exemplified by news translation. | |||
| The outcome | Upon course completion, students should be able to analyse key characteristics of various text types in written mass media in the source and target cultures and translate simpler general texts in accordance with the functionalist approach to translation, taking into account textual and extratextual factors. | |||

| Contents of lectures | The role and responsibility of a translator in a society. Functionalist approach to translation, relevance of intratextual and extratextual factors. Micro- and macro-structural features of elementary journalistic text types (hard news stories, feature articles, news reports, opinion pieces) and journalistic style in English and in Serbian. Characteristics of transeditations. Recognition of relevant extratextual information and the expressions that introduce them in a journalistic text. Translation of toponyms, institutions, abbreviations and acronyms. Researching translation problems in secondary literature. | |||
| Contents of exercises | Translation of texts from the subject fields of sociology, history, anthropology, philosophy, politics and economy in written media. Strategies and procedures in transeditation of hard news, feature articles and opinion pieces from English into mother tongue: reorganization, summarizing, addition, omission, generalization, depersonalization, cultural equivalence. Revision and review of translation. | |||
