Digital Technologies and Culture of Remembrance in the Balkans (and beyond)
May 25th, 2024
Faculty of Philosophy, University of Novi Sad, Vojvodina/Serbia

The Department of Media Studies (Faculty of Philosophy, University of Novi Sad) invites you to the 14th International Conference Bridges of Media Education to be held on 25th May 2024 at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Novi Sad, Serbia. The key theme of the conference in 2024 is: Digital Technologies and Culture of Remembrance in the Balkans (and beyond). The conference aims to bring together scholars, researchers and practitioners to explore the intersection of digital technologies and the preservation of cultural memory, with a particular focus on the Balkan region and its broader implications.

More than 20 years since the last wars in the post-Yugoslav area, this region is still burdened by the legacy of war, and the militant and hegemonic nationalist policies that organized the wars for the breakup of Yugoslavia are still dominant. In recent years, digital technologies have played a crucial role in shaping the way societies remember and commemorate their cultural memories, both for older generations and for digital natives. The conference seeks to examine how digital tools and platforms influence the culture of remembrance in the Balkans and beyond. Among others, we invite proposals that explore various aspects of this intersection, including but not limited to:

  • Digital archives and memory Institutions: Innovative approaches to digitizing and preserving cultural documents and oral histories;
  • Personal narratives and storytelling: How are individuals using digital tools to share personal stories and experiences of the past;
  • Virtual reality and augmented reality: Exploring the potential of VR and AR technologies in creating immersive experiences related to cultural memory;
  • Social media and memory: Examining the impact of social media platforms on the dissemination and interpretation of culture of remembrance;
  • Commemorative practices and rituals: How are digital tools and platforms transforming traditional practices of remembrance and commemoration in the region;
  • Public memory and historical narratives: How are digital technologies shaping public discourse and understandings of the past in the Balkans;
  • The implications of online activism, social media, and “fake news” for historical memory;
  • The ethical considerations and challenges in representing trauma and memory online;
  • Policy and ethics: Discussing the ethical considerations and policy frameworks in the digitization of cultural memory;
  • Global trends and initiatives in digital archiving, commemoration, and education.
