The goal | The students are familiarized with the texts of medieval Hungarian literature, the most significant works of the Hungarian Renaissance, and with works created during the period of the Reformation. | |||
The outcome | Knowledge of the stylistic, thematic, and motivic features of the literature of the medieval, Renaissance, and Reformation periods. | |||
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | The Christianization of Hungary; the structure and hierarchy of Christian civilization. The oldest Hungarian texts (Halotti Beszéd és Könyörgés [Funeral Sermon and Prayer], Ómagyar Mária-siralom [The Old Hungarian Lamentations of Mary]). The genres of codex literature (legend, exemplum, passion, vision). The emergence of Hungarian Neo-Latin literature, the Hungarian disciples of Erasmus of Rotterdam. The works of the Hungarian disciples of Erasmus: the translation of the New Testament. The spreading of the ideas of the Reformation in a country torn in three. The goals of the Reformation and the propaganda bridging the gap of an illiterate society: the liturgical song, Reformation drama, and dialogue. Chivalry and topics of Hungarian love poetry. The sources of Bálint Balassi’s poetics. The genre of széphistória. | |||
Contents of exercises | The students read and interpret the religious works of Medieval Hungarian literature, selected poems of Janus Pannonius, the forewords of the Hungarian disciples of Erasmus (Benedek Komjáti, Gábor Pesti, János Sylvester) to the translations of the Holy Scripture, Reformation dramas, the songs of András Szkhárosi Horvát, the fragments of Medieval Hungarian love poetry, Bálint Balassi’s poems, and the most significant works of the széphistória genre. | |||
