      The goal Improving and building up students' skills and competences acquired in the third semester during the course Translation of Non-Literary and Technical Texts, mastering the registers of technical fields included in the curriculum, as well as simulation of real-life situations involving the work of a translator. Basic knowledge of technical fields and extra-linguistic factors affecting the translation process, as well as skills of translating culture-specific texts. Analysis of source and target texts and application of the required translation procedures. Training in using corpora and parallel texts. Learning about types of texts within each of the specialized fields, as well as mastering the use of text-processing software necessary for writing and translating technical texts.
      The outcome The student possesses skills and competences necessary to produce a functional translation that fulfills various requirements of the translation market and is equipped with the knowledge to use the registers of various fields covered by the curriculum in the translation process. The student has, to a certain extent, the capability to understand the technical fields included in the curriculum and the extra-linguistic factors that affect the translation, and knows how to translate culture-specific texts. In the course of his/her everyday translation activities, the student uses text-processing software. The student is competent to edit and proofread both his/her own translation and that produced by another translator, and to verify and approve the final version of the translation in accordance with professional standards. The student has compiled glossaries and word lists in the technical fields covered by the curriculum.
      Contents
      Contents of lectures Syllabus units: (weeks 1, 2, 3 and 4) Translating texts from the fields of law and court translation; (weeks 5, 6, 7 and 8) Translating texts from the field of natural sciences; (weeks 9, 10, 11 and 12) Translating texts from the field of medical science.
      Contents of exercises The practical part of the course includes the compilation of glossaries and word lists, group and individual translations of an unfamiliar text in class, testing the knowledge of technical terminology at the end of each unit and a translation project done outside the class - an individual translation of a technical text of up to 10 pages.
