The outcome After the course the student is able to: (1) know what are the relevant research questions in historical case syntax, (2) recognise and interpret the external and internal motivation of semantic changes in Old Serbian case systems, (3) explain the case phenomena in Old Serbian texts, (4) diachronically explain the modern Serbian case phenomena.
    Contents
Contents of lectures 1. Key questions for historical case syntax (Types of syntactic changes; Typological causes of syntactic change; Syntactic changes caused by language contact; The change of the Proto‑Slavic unidimensional spatial case system to the bidimensional spatial case system); 2. The semantics of Old Serbian cases ('Grammatical' and 'concrete' uses of cases); 3. The semantics of Old Serbian prepositions (The origin of the prepositions); 4. The Old Serbian bidimensional spatial case system as a combination of orientation and direction parameters (The orientation parameters and Old Serbian prepositions; The direction parameters and Old Serbian case‑forms); 5. Paths of semantic extension and metaphorical uses of cases with prepositions (Non-spatial semantic roles: time, comitative, cause, purpose, experiencer, possessor, patient etc.).
