      The goal The objective of the course is to train students to recognize syntactic similarities and differences between English and Serbian, to enable them to explore and analyze one phenomenon with respect to which these two languages differ and to offer a sound explanation, relying on relevant literature in the field.
      The outcome Students can recognize phenomena with respect to which English and Serbian differ, they can find relevant literature on the topic and understand it; they can observe the selected phenomenon from different perspectives and can study it; they can offer an argumented solution or explanation of the problem and present it orally or in writing.
      Contents
      Contents of lectures Variation in syntax. Contrastive syntax: the big picture. Types of linguistic universal. Categories as features. Variation in categories. The Minimalist program. Lexicon, lexical items and their features. Crosslinguistic variation in Minimalism. Case, case systems and variability. Subjects and their typical properties. Argument structure, thematic hierarchy. Information structure. Word order.
